Can I buy from Taobao without Alipay? Yes — here is the route
Updated 2026-10 · ProxyBao editorial
Taobao checkout assumes a Chinese payment method and a Chinese delivery address. Overseas buyers usually solve both problems with an agent. The process is short, but each step has a detail that decides whether the order goes smoothly.
Step 1: Copy the product link, not a screenshot
The link carries the item ID, which is what the agent needs to place the order. A screenshot cannot be ordered. Make sure the link opens the exact variant you want, including size and colour.
Step 2: Confirm the real price and quantity
Taobao sellers often show a low starting price for the cheapest variant. The price in the cart can be higher. Enter the price you actually see for the variant you selected, and the quantity you want. A quote built on a guessed price is worse than no quote.
Step 3: Add weight and dimensions
Weight decides the freight, and dimensions decide whether volumetric weight applies. If you do not know them, use the seller's shipping information or ask the agent to measure the parcel after it arrives. A quote without dimensions is an estimate.
Step 4: Choose a channel by landed cost
Economy is cheaper but slower; express is faster but rounds weight more aggressively. Compare the landed total for the same parcel. If the item is urgent, the difference in transit time may be worth more than the freight difference.
Step 5: Read the duty disclaimer before paying
The recipient is the importer of record. Duty estimates are not prepayments. If you cannot accept that, do not place the order. A legitimate agent will show the disclaimer before payment, not hide it in a footer.
FAQ
Do I need a Chinese address?
Not with an agent. The agent's warehouse is the Chinese address. You provide your own international delivery address.
Can I buy from 1688 the same way?
Yes, but 1688 is wholesale. Many sellers have a minimum order quantity, and the unit price drops in tiers. Enter the quantity you will actually buy.
