How much does it cost to ship from Taobao to the USA?

Updated 2026-10 · ProxyBao editorial

There is no single shipping price for a Taobao order. Five separate costs stack up, and only one of them is the international flight. If you compare agents on a single "per kg" number, you will usually pay more at the end. Here is what each line means and how to check a quote.

1. The item price in CNY

The product price is set by the Taobao or 1688 seller, not by the agent. It is converted from CNY to USD at a rate that includes the agent's currency spread. Ask whether the published rate is the mid-market rate or the rate you are actually charged.

A spread of around 2% on a $40 item is roughly $0.80. It is not a scam by itself, but it should be disclosed, not buried in the exchange rate.

2. The service or commission fee

This is the agent's own charge for buying, receiving, checking and consolidating your parcel. On this site it is 8% of the item value with a $2.99 minimum. On a $41.96 order that is $3.36.

A percentage fee with a minimum is normal. A percentage fee with no minimum attracts tiny orders that lose money on handling. A flat fee with no percentage punishes larger orders. Check both the rate and the floor.

3. Domestic delivery inside China

The seller ships to the agent's warehouse in China. Most sellers charge a small domestic courier fee, and some ship free. It is usually a fixed amount per order rather than per item, so consolidating several purchases into one parcel is cheaper than shipping them separately.

4. International freight

This is the only line that depends heavily on weight and volume. Carriers charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, so a light but bulky item can cost more than a dense one. That is why a quote without dimensions is only an estimate.

Economy, standard and express channels differ in transit time and in how they round weight. Compare the final landed cost for the same parcel, not the headline rate per kilogram.

5. Import duty and taxes

Duty is set by the destination customs authority and the product's classification, not by the agent. The US $800 de minimis exemption ended on 29 August 2025, so most postal shipments from China now attract duty from the first dollar.

A quote can only estimate this. Treat the duty line as a budget figure, not a guaranteed amount, and read the disclaimer on the checkout page before you pay.

Worked example: a $41.96 item, 1 kg

Item price: $41.96. Service fee at 8%: $3.36. Domestic delivery: $1.40. Estimated duty at a simplified 10%: $4.20. Add the international freight for your chosen channel, and you have the landed cost.

If you add inspection, reinforced packing or insurance, those are fixed or percentage add-ons and are shown as separate lines. Nothing should appear as a surprise at the payment step.

  • Service fee has a $2.99 floor.
  • Insurance is 2% of the declared value.
  • Reinforced packing is $3 per parcel.
  • Inspection photos are $2 per item after the first.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to ship several Taobao orders together?

Usually yes. Domestic delivery and the first-kilogram charge are paid once, and the parcel can be packed densely to avoid volumetric weight.

Why is my quote different from the agent's rate card?

The rate card normally shows the freight only. Your quote also includes the service fee, domestic delivery, duty estimate and any optional services.

Does the quote include customs duty?

It shows an estimate, clearly labelled. Customs makes the final decision based on the commodity code and the declared value.
