Taobao agent vs forwarder: the difference that costs money

已更新 2026-10 · ProxyBao 编辑精选

The two services look similar on a pricing page and behave very differently when something goes wrong. Choose based on who has to talk to the seller.

What a Taobao agent does

An agent places the order in your name, pays the seller in CNY, receives the parcel at a Chinese warehouse, checks it, consolidates multiple orders, and arranges international shipping. When the seller sends the wrong colour or a damaged item, the agent is the party that can open a dispute on Taobao.

What a forwarder does

A forwarder gives you a Chinese receiving address. You buy from the seller yourself, pay with a method the seller accepts, and send the parcel to that address. The forwarder ships it abroad. It usually does not negotiate with the seller and does not inspect the goods.

Which is cheaper

A forwarder can be cheaper per kilogram because it does less work. An agent charges a service fee because it handles purchasing and after-sales. If you already have a working Alipay account and the seller ships domestically, a forwarder may be enough.

If you do not have Alipay, or the seller only sells to domestic buyers, an agent is usually the practical option. Paying a forwarder and then discovering the seller will not ship to the warehouse is a costly way to save a few percent.

Questions to ask either provider

Ask who opens the Taobao dispute if the item is wrong. Ask what happens to a parcel that arrives damaged at the Chinese warehouse. Ask whether storage is free and for how long. Ask for the exchange rate and the duty disclaimer in writing before you pay.

常见问题

Can a forwarder buy the item for me?

Some do as an extra service, but then it is acting as an agent. Check who is responsible for the purchase dispute.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

Not when an agent buys on your behalf. You do need a working contact email and phone number for delivery updates.
