Taobao agent fees explained
已更新 2026-10 · ProxyBao 编辑精选
Most Taobao agent complaints are not about the headline commission. They are about fees that appear later: a currency spread, a packing charge, a remote-area surcharge, or a duty estimate that was never explained. This page separates normal fees from hidden ones.
Fees that are normal
A service fee of roughly 5% to 10% of the item value is the market norm. A minimum fee protects the agent from loss-making micro-orders. A domestic delivery charge is also normal because the seller has to ship the item to the warehouse.
A currency spread is normal too, but it should be small and disclosed. If an agent advertises "no service fee" and makes money on a 6% exchange-rate spread, the fee is still there, just renamed.
Fees that should be optional
Inspection photos, reinforced packing and insurance are services, not mandatory charges. You should be able to switch each one off before paying. If a checkout adds them automatically and does not show a breakdown, that is a hidden fee.
- Inspection photos: $2 per item after the first item.
- Reinforced packing: $3 per parcel.
- Insurance: 2% of the declared value.
- Duty advance handling: $5 per parcel, plus the duty itself.
Fees that should never appear
A charge for "customs clearance" that is really just the courier's normal handling. A surcharge for paying by a common method. A fee for using the website. A restocking fee on an item that was never bought. These are red flags, not market practice.
Also check whether the agent charges storage after a free period. Thirty days free storage is a reasonable window for consolidation; indefinite free storage is not a sustainable business model.
How to compare two quotes
Use the same item link, the same quantity, the same destination and the same weight and dimensions. Compare the landed total, not the commission percentage. Then check three things: the exchange rate used, the disclaimer on duty, and whether any optional service was pre-selected.

Is an 8% service fee expensive?
It sits in the normal range. A lower percentage with a high exchange-rate spread can cost more. Compare the landed total for an identical order.
Should I pay for inspection?
For electronics, branded goods and anything above $100, yes. Photos before international shipping are much cheaper than returning an item from overseas.
